Three years after appearing for Atlanta United U19s in the UPSL Premier Division, 19-year-old defender Caleb Wiley has completed a move to Chelsea FC in the English Premier League. Set to join for a fee of just over $11 million, the left sided defender / midfielder will join the Chelsea first-team squad for preseason, before possibly being sent out on loan to continue his development.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Wiley has been capped twice by the Men’s National team and has played for Atlanta United his entire career. After playing in the UPSL’s Premier Division in 2021, the defender secured an MLS homegrown deal in 2022. Wiley has since then made 86 first-team MLS appearances, contributing six goals and nine assists.
Atlanta United U19 UPSL Head Coach Ricky Davie previously spoke about Caleb Wiley’s development at the club. “Caleb has been at the club since he was a U12 and has always gone about his business in the same manner. Whether training or playing, he always brings the same dedication to the game. He’s competed in both the UPSL and the MLS at such a young age, and still, is always one of the hardest workers. We’re incredibly proud of him.”
The UPSL congratulates Caleb Wiley as he embarks on this next chapter in his playing career and seeks to become only the third American-born player to play for Chelsea FC, after Christian Pulisic and Matt Miazga.
