NY Empire FC Battles to Gritty Extra-Time Win Over Union SC in Chaotic Playoff Clash

In a gritty and emotional UPSL Northeast American playoff clash, NY Empire FC emerged victorious on the road with a dramatic 2-0 extra-time win over Union SC. A match filled with high tension and heavy discipline finally broke open in the 110th minute when Wilber Gomez found the net, followed by a dagger goal from Nico Reinoso in the 117th to seal the result.

It was a battle of attrition under the lights, and the temperature wasn’t the only thing running hot. The match saw a flurry of cards, including four red cards — three to Union SC and one to NY Empire. Despite the chaos, NY Empire’s back line held strong, anchored by outstanding performances from defenders Trevor Henderson, George Yusuff, and Malcolm Swett.

Goalkeeper Justin Silva was rock solid between the posts, earning a shutout with several critical saves in regular time and extra time to keep Union SC off the scoreboard.

“We knew this was going to be a war — and it was,” said NY Empire head coach Max Ferro. “But our guys kept their heads, stuck to the plan, and showed what playoff football is all about. I’m proud of the way we stayed disciplined and capitalized when it counted.”

After 90 minutes of relentless, physical play ended in a scoreless deadlock, Empire turned the tide in extra time. In the 110th minute, Wilber Gomez latched onto a cross and coolly slotted home the opener, sending the away bench into a frenzy. Just seven minutes later, Nico Reinoso capped off a swift counterattack to make it 2-0 and shut the door on Union’s comeback hopes.

“We never stopped believing,” said Reinoso after the match. “The moment came, and I just focused on staying composed. It’s a special feeling to help send us to the semis.”

NY Empire FC now turns its focus to a high-stakes showdown with longtime rivals NY Renegades in the UPSL Northeast American semifinal. That match kicks off Saturday night at 7:30 PM at the Susa Sports Complex.

With momentum and resilience on their side, Empire marches on — battle-tested and ready.
