NY Empire FC kicked off the Spring 2026 campaign the right way on Saturday night, earning a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Kelmendi FC in front of a strong home crowd at SUSA Orlin & Cohen Sports Complex.

Empire came out sharp and controlled the tempo early, dominating possession and creating a number of dangerous chances. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute through newly signed midfielder Johan Velez, marking a dream debut. The goal was a product of high-level combination play—Wilber Gomez drove into the box and slipped a ball across to Naeem Charles, who delivered a clever backheel assist into Velez’s path. Velez made no mistake, finishing confidently to give Empire the lead.

Despite controlling much of the half, Empire was unable to extend the advantage, and Kelmendi capitalized just before the break, finding an equalizer in the 41st minute to make it 1–1 heading into halftime.

The second half followed a similar script, with Empire dictating possession and pushing forward. The decisive moment came in the 64th minute when Mason Chetti delivered the game-winner. A well-weighted long ball from Tim de Meij unlocked the defense, and Chetti finished clinically to restore Empire’s lead.

While the scoreline remained tight, Empire continued to create chances throughout the night but couldn’t convert additional opportunities. Still, the performance showed clear control and attacking intent, ultimately securing all three points to open the season.

There were several standout performances, particularly among the club’s debutants. Midfielders Stephen Turnbull, Mario Salguero, and goal-scorer Johan Velez all impressed in their first appearances, bringing energy, composure, and quality to the center of the pitch.

Defensively, Trevor Henderson and captain Justin Pierre anchored the back line effectively, limiting Kelmendi’s opportunities. Kenny Cordova provided stability in goal, while Adil Gowani made a solid debut in defense. Additional first appearances came from Dilan Santa in midfield and Diego Argueta, the High School All-American, adding depth and promise to the squad.

Off the bench, Empire maintained its intensity, with strong second-half contributions from Stephen Hollis, Malcom Swett, Adiel Barrera, and George Yuseff, helping close out the match.

It wasn’t a perfect performance, but it was a winning one. Empire showed dominance, depth, and flashes of the identity they aim to build this season. Most importantly, they walked away with three points.

Next up, NY Empire FC hits the road to play Red Hook Football Club Saturday at 4:30 PM EST.
